At Performance Fitness, we have always been big fans of the NBC television show, “The Biggest Loser”. The transformations that some of the contestants on that show go through, the lessons they learn, and the weight they lose can provide inspiration to all of us. This season they are doing something slightly different, and it provides the viewer with a lot of real life insight into the dynamics of the fitness and health club industry. Continue reading
As it is January – the time of resolutions made and broken – this month’s article addresses that which we all strive for – consistency and motivation. It is commonly cited that humans began their reign on earth about 2 to 2.5 million years ago. These early hunter-gatherer people were alive during the Paleolithic era where almost all of human evolution and adaptation to the world occurred. It wasn’t until about 12,000 years ago that agriculture was developed and people started farming and eating grains. Those 12,000 years represent less than 1% of human history. Anthropological evidence shows that Paleolithic humans were stronger, had far fewer bone deformities (from malnutrition or infectious disease), almost zero cavities, lower infant mortality rates, far fewer deficiencies in calcium, iron and protein (which early farmers had significant problems with), and hunter gatherers tended to live longer than their farming counterparts.

We all know that our bodies change with time. Due to stresses and differences from both internal and external sources, we simply do not live in the same bodies that we did 5, 10, or 20 years ago. Much of what we do at Performance Fitness is in an attempt to counteract the negative changes that occur over time. This month we are going to address these changes by decade, and make some programming tips to help you answer the assault of time. Continue reading
We have all heard the 80’s exercise catch phrase “No Pain, No Gain”. When Jane Fonda was spouting it off, she was mostly referring to the accumulation of lactic acid in our muscles during anaerobic work, leading to the common burning sensation – remember “Feel the Burn” as well? Today, I want to take a step back and talk about the benefits of discomfort, in terms of exercise, health, and personal growth. Continue reading
